Innovation – get it here

World’s first passenger railway station. World’s first computer with a stored programme. World’s first IVF baby. World’s first hip replacement surgery. World’s first two-dimensional material (one atom thick!). World’s first co-operative business model.

Someone should have a big rubber stamp saying “Made in the North West”, and stamp it all over history.

It’s truly inspiring…but we can’t be complacent. Innovation is a key driver of productivity for businesses in the region, and we have to keep up the standard - constantly trying to create the right environment for innovation to flourish.

Innovation often happens ‘at the edges’ – the interface between two groups, or sectors, or ways of working. The more varied people you meet and the more businesses you understand, the more likely you are to have that great idea.

RAW 2010 is a fantastic opportunity for the region’s top entrepreneurs. Just think of all that talent and drive in one room, and all the new connections and business opportunities that will come out of it. Maybe even a world’s first. I can’t wait.
